Our aim is to have a Saturday or Sunday walk once a month, plus spring and autumn short breaks and at least one longer holiday each year. We also have the occasional weekday walk.

We have heard the sad news that our Honorary President Audrey Andrews died on 6th October 2026, peacefully at her care home, where she had been staying since about May of this year.

Audrey was a very long standing member of our group, and always took an interest in what was happening even when she was no longer able to come out on walks.

When I have the details of her funeral arrangements I will let you all know.

A tribute to Audrey by Bob Tolson

It was with great sadness that we learned that Audrey Andrews, our Honorary Life President and former Secretary, passed away peacefully on 6^th October 2026. She was 93.

Audrey took on the role of Secretary of the BBC Club’s Rambling Section in 1970. She wasn’t just the Secretary she was the Rambling Section. She organised the walks programme then printed and posted the circulars with the details of the rambles, almost invariably led by…..Audrey! She was always an incredibly cheerful and optimistic person and she needed to be to keep the section going during that period.

Her work and determination paid dividends though and within a few years Audrey had managed to recruit a large team of leaders and not only did we enjoy a full programme of Sunday walks but also rambling weekends in far flung corners of Britain and then week-long walking holidays in areas like the Lake District and the Brecon Beacons. Some of us old timers have fond memories of Audrey (Julie) Andrews running down a mountainside singing “The hills are alive with the sound of music” with a broken wrist and her infectious laugh.

Audrey was a natural organiser. She sorted things out seemingly effortlessly and always with a smile on her face. When she eventually handed over the reins and resigned as Secretary she was elected Honorary Life President to her obvious delight. Audrey led her last BBC ramble on 17^th April 2010 around Primrose Hill when she was 76 and continued to take an active interest in the Rambling Section even when she decided that she could no longer take part in the walks.

We all owe Audrey a huge debt of gratitude for her dedication to the section. Without her it may well have ceased to exist and we wouldn’t be enjoying all the walks we do today. On a personal note, for the many of us who met our future wives and husbands on BBC Club walks, well Audrey has a lot to answer for!
